The island of Borneo is located in South East Asia. Borneo is the world's third largest island (after Greenland and New Guinea) covering 746,309 square miles (1,932,930 sq km), bigger than Texas and Oklahoma combined. Borneo consists of the Kalimantan provinces of Indonesia, the two Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah, and the tiny, oil-rich, independent Sultanate of Brunei.
This region constitutes one of the earth's few remaining major tropical wilderness areas. Nearly 10% of the world's total tropical rainforest is now located in Indonesia, with the Kalimantan and Irian Jaya provinces containing the richest botanical species. Kalimantan has the largest expanse of tropical rainforest in South East Asia.
"The land is one great, wild, untidy, luxuriant hothouse, made by nature for herself... How great would be the desire in every admirer of nature to behold, if such were possible, the scenery of another planet!... Yet to every personÂ… it may truly be saidÂ… that the glories of another world are opened to him".
Charles Darwin, from The Voyage of the Beagle, when he first experienced the tropical rainforest a century and a half ago.
